Thats pretty much it, so enjoy .

You might have seen some iBooks, Macbooks, Powerbooks, etc. with the Apple logo on the lid colored, maybe it was colored the old school rainbow color, maybe it was a solid color like graysail’s iBook.(seen here) Sometimes, you’ll see the rainbow. It will look dull and not very professional. Other times, you might see one that looks really really top notch. This review is about those top notch colored Apple logo’s you might see. If the ones you have seen look top notch, they are probably made by iColours. I am going to review the rainbow iColours inserts.

I recently purchased an insert from www.icolours.ca just for a review. I had seen these inserts about a year ago. I never gave it much thought. I thought they were very interesting and they looked really nice. I never really had much of a desire to actually color the logo on my iBook. I did try a Knox Ware logo once, and a skull. But I decided against it the day I put them in. It just didn’t feel right, in a sense. I wanted to keep the cleanliness of the iBook, I thought a skull looked out of place, it felt almost taboo.

After taking out the skull and the logo. I stumbled upon these films, I was amazed at how clean they looked. Since it has been a year or more, I had a change of heart and decided to try one of these iColour films out. I headed over to www.icolours.ca to check out their current products. They have a few more selections than the last time I went. I decided to go with the old school rainbow. You just cannot go wrong with the rainbow Apple logo. The film cost $3.99 USD with free shipping. You really cannot beat free shipping. After waiting 2 days, the insert arrived! I was very surprised at how fast the shipment was. The package was a plain white envelope with the iColours logo.

I blurred out our addresses so neither one of us receive any weirdo’s on our doorsteps.

I pulled out the contents, wrapped around the insert was a little thank you note, very nice touch, it also kept the insert from being bent in the mail, the paper used was card stock type paper, so it’s a little thicker than regular paper.

This is where I got excited. I seen how nice the colors were. They are the correct shades. Which to me is great, because I have seen some other inserts by other companies that looked a little off. The color is dead on with the iColours.

I was really excited to put this into my iBook, when I held the insert up to the light I was amazed at out crystal clear the colors were. I proceeded to take the lid off of the iBook, the lids are held together with 4 hex screws, very simple to get the screws out. If you have never taken the top cover off on an iBook before, you will want to do it with precaution. The top half clips onto the LCD bezel on the front, basically it’s clipped all around. You have to bend up on the cover to get it to pop off, you can also use a small flathead, but be VERY CAREFUL!, you could slip and stab your LCD. That would be bad. There is also a manual on icolours.ca, you can pick your model of laptop and read the guide, www.ifixit.com also has some very good guides on how to take apart your laptop.

With the lid now off of the iBook, I centered the insert onto the inside of the lid, over the Apple logo.

Once it was in place, I held it up to the window to see what the lid would look like with light passing through it, mind you, the colors are not correct because of the light intensity and poor lighting in my room.

Once I made sure everything was in place, I secured the insert down with clear tape. I then clipped the housing back onto my LCD and screwed the iBook lid back together. The remaining pictures are of the final outcome.

All in all, I am very pleased with this product. The quality is superb, the price is very fair, the shipping is extremely fast. The support is amazing for people that are new to taking computers apart. A newbie shouldn’t feel overwhelmed if they are just jumping into it. I really cannot praise this product enough. It is definitely staying in my iBook for a long time. The only cons to the product are, I should have more!!! And I dont have enough mac laptops to put them in haha. Really, there are no cons. This mod here is version 2.0 of the first thumbdrive mod (this one is slightly enhanced). This time around, I used the newest 1 Gig thumb drive from PNY to do the modification. My 512 died after dropping it on the ground really hard.

One of the things I don’t like too much, is the fact that the close buttons are on the tabs themselves. It’s a nice feature, but, I’m used to the old version. I like clicking at the end of the tab bar to close my tabs. I’m going to be showing you how to change the behavior of the close buttons. You’ll be able to move them and modify them to a different location.

First thing you want to do is, type about:config into the address bar.

Find and change browser.tabs.closeButtons to the value you wish to use. Below are the numerical values and what they represent.

0 – Displays the close button only on the active tab.
1 – Displays the close buttons on every tab. (default)
2 – Never displays the close buttons.
3 – Displays the single close button at the end of the tab strip (This is the old, default Firefox 1.5 behavior)

The way I want the tab bar to be, is like 1.5 so I would choose number 3. You can choose what you would like to do. Double click browser.tabs.closeButtons and change the integer to the number representation you would like to use.

If browser.tabs.closeButtons does not exist, you can create it. Right-click the page and select New and then Integer.

You wont have to restart Firefox either, the changes will take effect automatically. Enjoy.

Today (Sep 29th 2005) I took an old, busted 15 gig ipod hard drive and thought, “what am i going to do with this useless hunk of junk?” I didn’t want to throw it away because I am a pack rat, I keep all kinds of things, even if they’re broken. I got to thinking, “I could make this bad boy a belt buckle”, so that is what I did.

After picking the fabrics I wanted, I needed to come up with a plan for what I wanted my case to look like. Should it have pockets? Should it have a strap? How should it be kept shut? What should I use to cushion the fabric? How thick should it be? Where would I put the strap(s) if I decided to have any? Should I put something inside to make the bag stiff or should it be floppy? If I use buttons to keep it shut, what buttons should I use? How many? If i use a zipper to keep the bag shut, what kind of zipper? After much deliberation, I decided to keep it simple.

The MacBook is a mere 1 inch thick, so i decided not to go with a strap, fearing that it might rip out. I decided on buttons rather than a zipper to keep the bag shut worrying that the zipper might scratch the edge of my baby. I chose 2 large white buttons from my grandmother’s old button collection to keep the case shut. I found some fusible interfacing that was pretty stiff so I decided to use that along with a few (4) layers of batting.

I decided to make the bag as simple as possible, so I searched through patterns and found one that I liked the idea of and adjusted it to suit my job. The pattern requires 3 pieces for each layer of the bag (inside, outside, and filling). The three pieces are (1)a large piece (13.75″x25.25″) that will become the front, back, and top flap of the back, (2) a narrow strip (1.75″x9.75″)for one side of the bag, and (3) another narrow strip (1.75″x9.75″) for the other side of the bag. I had to cut 2 pieces of fabric for the large strip from the inside fabric because I messed up the first cut and made it impossible to cut a big enough piece from the remaining fabric.

After I cut out all the pieces of fabric that I’d be using for the case, I started sewing the inside of the bag (if you’re sewing anything, a good rule to go by is to cut all your pieces before you start sewing. same rule for cooking, assemble all your ingredients before beginning. You don’t want to find out half way through that you don’t have enough flour for your cake…I just thought about who I’m talking to, moving on….) Here are what the inside pieces look like without being sewn together:

After I got them all sewn up, I ironed on the fusible interfacing (the stiff one). After it was attached, the bag looked like this:

I stitched the batting together so it wouldn’t slide around inside the case too much. Next I sewed the side strips of the outside fabric to the large piece of outside fabric. Once this was done, I put the right sides of the inside and outside fabric together and started sewing, making sure the batting was getting picked up along the way. After pulling and stitching and tearing out seams and re-sewing seams, I finally got everything together. It’s very snug (I think it’s a little too snug, ghostshadow thinks it’s perfect), and very soft. Besides the snugness I’m happy with the way it turned out. Here is the final product:

If you have any questions, if something doesn’t make sense (I wouldn’t be surprised), ask away. I did not have to buy any of the materials I used to make this case so it was kind of free. It didn’t require any special skills (besides the 3 month long training course on how to operate the sewing machine), I used plain old scissors, rotary cutter, ruler, cutting mat, straight pins, and didn’t use any fancy stitching. The whole process from nothing to a bag took a few hours, a lot more time consuming than buying a bag, but it’s a good feeling knowing that you made something rather than bought it.
